Lots of people get confused about how to use compound words. A compound word is two or more words which make one word. There are 3 different types of compounds. The 3 types of compounds are closed compounds, open compounds & hyphenated compounds.
Closed Compounds - should be written as one word
Examples
baseball, classwork, greenhouse, sunlight, flashlight, heatwave, raspberry, grandmother, shoelace, cupcakes, mailbox, afternoon, airplane, butterfly, iceberg, notebook & daydream
Open Compounds - words should be written separately
Examples
peanut butter, high school, ice cubes, voice mail, first aid, full moon, key chain, face mask, shoe box, fairy tale & seat belt
Hyphenated Compounds - words should be joined by a hyphen (-)
Examples
well-known, forty-two, two-thirds, drive-thru, self-control, sisters-in-law, short-term, high-tech, full-time, right-handed, best-selling, x-ray & air-tight
